Welcome

My name is Mike Ko, a 19-year old home-schooled student from Hong Kong.

For my application to universities, I have created this personal portfolio website, detailing my education and personal life, which allows me to express myself both efficiently and effectively.

In 2011, I attended a summer workshop on basic website and motion media design. Then I read several web design books to grasp the basics on forming layouts and simple coding. I later made this website using Adobe’s Dreamweaver web design software. Below is a brief introduction of the site’s different sections. You can explore them in whatever order you wish.

Home-School Philosophy describes my unique educational background. My home-school study approach is different from the structured programs of the UK, US, or Canada. Rather, it is a set of attitudes and principles that was formed completely from scratch by me and my family. My studies are mostly managed independently under this system.

Study Curriculum provides details of my past nine years of studies. There are three levels of curriculum: Foundation, Intermediate, and Advanced. Over the years, my hours of study each day have increased from four to six and a half hours.

Of course, there is also the staple of any application, the Personal Statement. This offers a description of me as both a student and a person. It infers what I have done, what I am doing, and what I may do in the future. Through this, you can make a general assessment of me and perhaps envision my potential as well.

Exam and Academic Ability details my perspectives on the different approaches used by local conventional education and in my home schooled studies, respectively.

The videos in Interests and Activities show a more active and personal side of me. You can see how I play various sports, as well as some of my hobbies. I think these are a positive and vital part of my life.

Before I focused on science subjects, I have already discovered the benefits and enjoyment in learning languages. Apart from my native languages, Cantonese and Mandarin, I have also studied foreign languages by myself. In Foreign Languages, you can see how I study English, Italian, and Japanese. These include book and movie lists, as well as essays.

Oral Practice contains sample videos of recent oral presentations for my science textbooks’ chapters. Each shows an entire presentation, which typically lasts more than an hour. I began doing these exercises routinely ever since the Intermediate stage. In the past six years, I have done 299 hours from 125 chapters in Intermediate, and 85 hours from 51 chapters in Advanced. To me, this total of 384 hours in oral practice is definitely an academic milestone and an invaluable experience.

Writings and Oral Presentations contains 20 Commentary and Original essays presented both in text and speech through videos. These presentations give my opinions on books that I have read or original thoughts on specific topics. Writing and presenting these essays has been an ongoing exercise that greatly improved my presentation skills. These shall certainly help me to communicate efficiently throughout life.

Science Vision states my expectations on how scientific enterprises should develop in the future.

Personal contains my IELTS report, contact information, a reference, and correspondences between me and public organizations on particular issues.

Through the portfolio, you can assess my readiness and commitment to further my studies in university. With a good foundation and potential, I am confident that I can take full advantage of a university education.

                        Thank you and enjoy reading.
