Advanced

Core Subjects

In Advanced, my science subjects – Physics, Chemistry, and Biology – remain the focus of my studies. However, at this stage topics are explored at deeper and sometimes more mathematical levels. Apart from textbooks, I have found some free online university lectures on the three science subjects. These reinforce my scientific knowledge from conventional studies. Yet more importantly, I can also watch excellent lectures given by good lecturers. While convenient, it would be even better if one can ask questions and get answers live. On top of these studies, I also allocate time to read additional, related science titles of interest. These offer immediate knowledge on specific areas.

By Advanced, my approach to Mathematics is mainly to regard it as a precise language of science. To understand in-depth scientific concepts, one must employ the methods of mathematics. So in this period I sought to further increase my mathematical knowledge, especially those useful in science. Quite fortunately, I found some good textbooks with both mathematical and scientific perspectives from the public libraries. These provide an excellent mathematical foundation to facilitate my scientific studies at the entry-levels of university education. Such knowledge shall also help to determine which scientific fields interest me the most as I study.

Reading magazines has become a source of supplementary, but highly relevant knowledge that I read consistently. In Advanced I read three magazines: TIME, Scientific American, and Science. I have subscribed to all three magazines, as the latter two are unavailable in the public libraries. Yet unlike before, I have adopted a more selective reading approach to magazines in Advanced. Specifically, I only read articles and topics that interest me, regardless of the issue’s date. This approach is quite necessary for magazines like Science, which has numerous reports and other articles. Science’s articles are highly technical, and initially were quite difficult to comprehend. Yet my ability to understand them increased as I grew more accustomed to the styles of scientific literatures.
